Mentoring Through Gender Inequality

We all know that gender inequality exists in our industry, particularly at the senior level.

While significant improvements have been made since I started, such as diversity and inclusion programs and flexible work policies, we still have a long way to go.

One way I try to play my part, and how you can too, is through mentorship.

If you have 10 or even five years of experience in the industry and have never mentored anyone, as in genuinely taking them under your wing and providing advice and resources, I recommend you start now.

We all need a helping hand at some point (I know I’ve had a few), and the best way to equip the next generation is by passing on knowledge and direct guidance.

There’s nothing better than seeing someone’s passion grow and watching them rise up the ranks of their chosen career.

That’s why I started ‘Big Careers, Little Kids’ 20 years ago alongside Heidi Rudolph

It’s an organization that connects Chicago-based female professionals in law, finance and business. It acts as a local support network for working moms who are ambitious senior professionals – providing a safe space to network, gain mentorship, resources and a helping hand.

You don’t have to wait until you’re a partner or highly credentialed before you start ‘giving back’ – it starts from now wherever you are. Outside of Big Careers, Little Kids there are plenty of initiatives available to get involved in.
